A New Hampshire car accident is an unpleasant thought, so who would want to dwell on the possibility that a crash can happen at anytime? While it might feel better to “bury your head in the sand” and think that an accident will never happen to you, your best bet is to be proactive. While not every car wreck is avoidable, there are some things that you can do to minimize your risks.

A few years back, Edmunds.com compiled their top editors’ tips to prevent a car accident. Below is a list of eight of these tips.

  1. Avoid the temptation to travel in the fast lane. The reason for this tip might not be what you think. It has less to do with speed as it does available “escape routes.” When you are in the center or right lane, you have more options to avoid a hazard. You can quickly change lanes or pull onto the shoulder.
  2. Always scan the road ahead. This doesn’t just apply to the car directly in front of you. It is important that you are also aware of what is going on in front of that vehicle.
  3. Don’t rely solely on your mirrors. You should turn and look before making any lane changes, because there might be a vehicle in your blind spot.
  4. Drive extra cautiously at night. Many people are drawn to the idea of traveling at night – the traffic is lighter and children will sleep during the journey. However, there are certain dangers that are higher at night than the day, such as the prevalence of drunk drivers and teens on the road.
  5. Put those hands in the 9 and 3 o’clock position. This hand position gives you the best possible control, if you have to maneuver to avoid a collision.
  6. Make sure your car is properly maintained. Old tires, worn out brakes and other issues can be a recipe for disaster. You need to keep your car in good shape to lower your risk of an accident.
  7. Watch the drivers around you. It is often the other driver you have to worry about. If a car starts veering into your lane, it could mean a few things, all of which aren’t good. The driver might be drunk, distracted or tired. Get away from the vehicle immediately.
  8. Know what your car can handle. You should be familiar with how long it takes to stop, the grip of your tires and even how your vehicle handles corners. Knowing the details of your vehicle can do wonders for your safety.

If despite your best attempts to avoid a collision, you still find yourself injured by a careless driver, you might be able to take legal action.
