The Bureau of Labor Statistics' worker safety and health department collects data relating to on-the-job injuries, illnesses and deaths. This data is used to track trends in workplace injuries and, hopefully, find ways to prevent them. Please use the links below as a basic guide to the BLS injuries, illnesses and fatalities program.

  • Overview of Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries- This page details the ways in which the BLS compiles and uses the data it gathers. Among other reasons the CFOI program helps prevent fatal work accidents by giving safety analysts the information they need to: inform workers of life threatening hazards associated with various jobs, promote safer work practices through enhanced job safety training and assess and improve workplace safety standards.
  • News Releases- Here you will find the most current data on workplace injuries and fatalities. The latest annual reports as well as a large archive of older statistics are available here.
  • State Data- Along with national data the BLS also collects state specific data. State program names, address, phone numbers and SOII data are available. Find information for New Hampshire and Vermont here.
  • Types of Occupational Illnesses- The BLS lists many occupational illnesses. Examples include: skin disorders and diseases, respiratory conditions, poisoning, hearing loss, heatstroke, frostbite, decompression sickness, AIDS, HIV and malignant or benign tumors.
  • FAQ's- Detailed answers to many questions are given here. Questions include: Which occupations have the highest fatality rates? and How widespread is violence in the workplace?

We hope that the information listed on this page will help you better understand the trends and causes of on the job injuries, illnesses and fatalities. Though they can be of little comfort if you have suffered an injury while at work the statistics can help workers and employers alike make changes in their work environment to prevent needless injury and death.

If you have been injured or made ill while at work you may need help filling for and winning your workers compensation claim. Be sure that you are seen by a medical professional immediately in order to properly document any and all injuries. Also, when the insurance company calls or visits, DO NOT SIGN any paperwork. Only an experienced workers compensation attorney can ensure that you are given a sum that will cover your current medical bills, ongoing medical treatment and time away from work, both now and in the future.
