A group of Silver Lake students were running on a country road when they were attacked by several large dogs. Most of the runners and their coach had already passed the dogs when the 115-pound American bulldogs attacked.
Audrina Monteith was running when the dogs ran out and knocked her to the ground.
"I had fallen to the ground and they were attacking me at my feet, so I tried kicking them off," she said.
Coach Kevin Brokaw had circled back to check on a group of runners when he found two girls bitten and two others cornered. He used his bike to distract them so that the girls could run to safety. Though he was not bitten, the dogs did attack his bicycle.
The bike had blood on its tires as did the hubcaps of the first responder's squad car. When Lt. John Ritter arrived on the scene he used his car to protect the others. The dogs proceeded to flatten two of his tires.
The team had been running past the house for years with no problems from the dogs. Both dogs were tested for rabies and the owner was ticketed under the vicious animal ordinance.
