Federal Grant to Prevent Prescription Errors in Vermont | Attorneys VT

Posted on Oct 27, 2009

Thanks to a $1 million federal grant doctors and pharmacists will be using a new electronic prescription system.  The grant, championed by U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, will be given to Vermont by the Department of Health and Human Services.

"In medical care, we're on the brink of a major breakthrough," Leahy said. "Electronic records hold the potential for literally billions of dollars in health savings.

The grant will give physicians and small pharmacists in Vermont a chance to use the e-Prescription system.   The electronic system is already being used by many large pharmacies and some doctor's offices.  Dr. Anthony Williams, an internist with a private practice in Berlin has been using the system for six months.

"The drug-drug interactions are checked automatically, it's hard when you're tired or sleep deprived or when you're busy, you don't always pick up on these things."

Aside from avoiding drug interactions the system would help reduce confusion between doctor and pharmacists.  Hard to read handwriting and similar drug names are a common cause of medication mix-ups.

If a medication error has affected you or a family member you may have a medical malpractice claim.  At Van Dorn & Curtiss we take your suffering seriously and are passionate about protecting your rights.  Please contact our attorneys today for your free consultation.  The sooner your call the sooner we can start fighting for you.
