A report on worker safety in Massachusetts was recently released. The report details how 66 people lost their lives while on the job in Massachusetts. According to Marcy Goldstein-Gelb, executive director of MassCOSH,
"This report demonstrates that the cost of cutting corners on safety is paid in human lives."
One of the victims was David Gonzalez of Worchester. Mr. Gonzalez was pulled into a piece of machinery at a paper manufacturing plant. The report, "Dying for Work in Massachusetts: The Loss of Life and Limb in Massachusetts Workplaces," outlined the details of the industrial accident that took Mr. Gonzalez's life.
According to the report his life would have been saved if the company had properly installed safety guards on the machinery, properly trained its employees and made sure that employees who do not speak English understood all of the safety measures in place.
The accident was investigated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Their investigation found that 12 serious safety violations had been committed.
Massachusetts is not the only state where working can cost you your life. Though New Hampshire has one of the lowest rates of worker death, on the job accidents, injuries and deaths do occur regularly.
Nationwide over 4 million workers are injured and more than 5,000 are killed each year.
If you have been injured on the job and need help filing for workers compensation or fighting the denial of your claim please contact your New Hampshire lawyers at Van Dorn & Curtiss today for your free consultation.
