New Hampshire Employer Faces Multiple Worker Safety Violations

Posted on Jun 30, 2009

A New Hampshire gun maker is facing stiff penalties after the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) found many violations at the plant.

The violations occurred between November 2008 and May 2009 and total $255,150 for 60 alleged safety and health standards violations.  The company under fire is Sturm Ruger & Co. Inc. and the violations occurred at its Newport firearms manufacturing plant.

According to Rosemarie Ohar, area director in OSHA's Concord office, "Our inspections identified a large number of mechanical, respirator protection, electrical, lead, fire, explosive and other hazards that must be effectively and continually addressed to protect the workers at this plant from potentially deadly or disabling injuries and illnesses now and in the future."

One of the more serious violations was termed "willful" and carries with it a $63,000 proposed fine.  The company failed to guard rotating parts of drill presses, sanding and polishing machines.  If an employee made contact with the parts the risk of severe or fatal injuries would be significant.

OSHA defines a willful violation as one committed with plain indifference to or intentional disregard for employee safety and health.
