Vermont | Deaths from Asbestos Exposure Deemed Work Related

A recent study by the Vermont Department of Health has found that five deaths from asbestosis from 1996-2005 were connected to the victims exposure to asbestos while they worked.  The five people were of particular interest to the Heath Department as they lived near the Vermont Asbestos Group (VAG) mine. 

Residents and officials were concerned that people living near the mine were suffering from mesothelioma, a disease that is only caused by breathing in the fibers of asbestos.

Members of the FLO alliance- a group of concerned citizens from Franklin, Lamoille and Orleans counties- teamed up with the Health Department to study the illnesses and deaths.

Health Commissioner Wendy Davis, MD stated that, "Although the news may be a sad reminder for the loved ones of those who have died, with this study we have been able to identify work exposures that can explain the deaths in the area around the mine."

The study focused on phone interviews with family members of the deceased.  The questions asked focused on the occupation, hobbies and residential history of those who died from asbestos exposure.

According to Dr. Davis the mine is now used for recreation and for geological and botanical studies.  However, she warns against using the mine for any purpose. "...we continue to recommend that people and pets stay off the mine for health and safety reasons."
