The Travis Roy Foundation was created after its namesake was injured only eleven seconds into his college hockey career. Travis Roy sustained an injury that shattered two of his cervical vertebrae, severely damaging his spinal cord. Now a quadriplegic, Roy has started a successful foundation that strives to help those affected by spinal cord injuries.
According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) in the U.S. over 250,000 people are living with a spinal cord injury. In addition an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 spinal cord injuries occur each year. The Travis Roy Foundation works to help fund research in the treatment and cure of spinal cord injuries. In addition, the foundation helps the injured gain access to assistive devices such as wheelchairs, ramps, modified vans, shower chairs and other adaptive devices. The foundation hopes to help quadriplegics live the fullest live possible while scientists work towards a cure for spinal cord injuries.
