Driver Cited in Major Traffic Accident
Local police have cited the driver who caused a major traffic accident. Sulma Aguilar of Everett , MA is facing charges of operating to endanger and marked lanes violations. Police say that the investigation is not closed and that more charges may follow.
The accident occurred on Interstate 95 near the Route 113 exit . The accident began when Aguilar collided with a tanker truck in the next lane.
The tanker was holding 10,000 gallons of gasoline. The gas spilled out of the truck and into the Merrimack River. The Coast Guard, Salisbury Fire Department and Clean Harbors worked to clean the spilled fuel.
The impact caused the tanker to slide onto its side, which caused two other vehicles to become involved: a Honda Odyssey and Toyota Corolla. The three vehicles contained 10 people. All ten were taken to area hospitals, many of them with serious injuries.
In addition to the injuries I-95 was shutdown in both directions for several hours. The back ups extended up to the New Hampshire rest areas and down to Newbury.
