Manchester Accident Kills Pedestrian
A Manchester accident involving a pedestrian claims the life of a woman after she is struck while crossing the street. The incident took place at approximately 2:00 PM on Saturday afternoon, April 3, 2010, on Putnam Street.
According to Manchester police, the victim, Joanna Lynn Baqqi, 60 of Manchester, was crossing Putnam Street when she was hit by a truck making a left turn from Bartlett Street onto Putnam. The driver has been identified as Normand A. Cayer, 71, also of Manchester. The incident occurred right around the corner from Cayer’s home.
Rescue crews transported Baqqi to Catholic Medical Center in Manchester before being flown to Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston. She was later pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the accident.
Cayer told police that he did not see Baqqi until she started to run in front of his truck.
“She had her groceries and everything,” one witness reported.
The Manchester pedestrian accident is still under investigation by local authorities. Police have indicated that they do not believe speed or alcohol played a role in the unfortunate event.
This is a terrible accident. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Ms. Baqqi’s family and friends during this difficult time.
