How Safe Are Vermont and New Hampshire Hospitals?
Medical errors are more common than you might realize. As a matter of fact, according to a study published in The New England Journal of Medicine, nearly 18 percent of patients fall victim to errors committed by their medical professionals.
The study, conducted at 10 North Carolina hospitals between 2002 and 2007, showed that many patients sustained an injury resulting from a medical mistake. North Carolina was targeted for the study because that state is considered an industry leader in improving patient safety.
The study showed that of the 2,341 patients studied, 588 were injured. The study detailed that:
- 42.7 percent of those injured required an extended stay at the hospital
- 2.9 percent sustained a permanent injury
- 2.4 percent suffered a fatal injury
