Taking Pictures While Driving: A Recipe for Disaster
The rise of digital cameras and higher quality cellphones has given birth to a new phenomenon called the “selfie.” A selfie is a picture you snap of yourself and post to a social media site such as Facebook or Instagram.
This form of self-expression is so popular that over three million people have posted selfies to Instagram alone with the hashtag #driving. Nearly 70,000 more photos have been posted to Instagram with hashtags such as #drivingtowork, #drivinghome, and #drivingselfie, all of which were snapped at the risk of everyone else on the road.
Death from Distraction
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that over 3,000 people were killed in distracted driving auto accidents in 2012, and this was before the rise of the selfie. How taking pictures while driving will impact these statistics is yet to be seen, but one thing is certain, if you are injured or a loved one is killed by a driving taking their own photograph, you are entitled to seek compensation well beyond the offerings of even the most generous insurance company.
