A Cure for Spinal Cord Injury?
Currently, victims of spinal cord injury have very little hope of full recovery. Depending on the severity of the injury, damage may be permanent or require years of therapy to overcome. But a team of researchers from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases believe they may be on their way to discovering an effective cure for this debilitating injury.

Epothilone, long used as a medication for cancer patients, has been shown to reduce the formation of scar tissue and stimulate cell regeneration in injured spinal cords. Thus far, the team of German researchers have only used this medication on animals, but preliminary tests show epothilone can stabilize microtubules while reactivating the regenerative properties of damaged nerve cells, allowing for full recovery even when damage is severe. The researchers hope these findings remain consistent once human trials begin.
