American Spirits Charged with Deceptive Advertising
American Spirits manufacturer, the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, is at the center of a class action lawsuit alleging deceptive marketing practices. According to plaintiffs, the use of terms “all-natural” and “additive-free” are patently untrue. In fact a recent study found that American Spirit cigarettes contain ammonia and up to an alarming 20x more nicotine than other commercial cigarette brands. A similar lawsuit was filed last month in Florida.
Deceptive marketing can lead consumers to believe that a dangerous product is safe or, at the very least, less dangerous than competing products. While many may argue that all cigarettes should be seen as unsafe – a statement found in fine print on packages of American Spirits – even the FDA has warned the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company that its advertising practices are deceptive and must be modified.
